Microbes and Water: The Enemies of Stored Diesel Fuel

Above ground fuel tank holding diesel fuelDiesel fuel can last up to a year in its tank without problems. This stability can be a benefit to farmers or to residents in remote areas who need accessible fuel in long-term storage. In fact, you can even extend the life of diesel fuel up to five years when you treat it with a fuel stabilizer.

Prevent Condensation

Get rid of water contaminants by using products that either emulsify or demulsify it. Of course, prevention is better than cure. Keep diesel fuel safe from water by keeping your diesel tanks full. Lack of air space inside the tank discourages condensation, which can lead to the formation of water.

Kill the Microbes

You can still save your diesel fuel tank contaminated with microbes by treating the fuel with a biocide. Prevent microbes from forming in the first place by applying the biocide whenever you place diesel fuel in a long-term storage. Diesel fuel stabilizer already acts like biocides, so you can simply use such products unless you want actual biocides.

Degradation Agents

In spite of the stability of diesel fuel, two elements — microbes and water — can still affect its quality. Both of them can cause degradation in diesel, leaving you with darkened fuel that has sludges, gums, and varnishes. Water is the more serious enemy though, as its presence can encourage the growth of microbes.

Signs of Contamination

When you fill your vehicle or tractor with the water-contaminated diesel, you will experience engine problems that indicate the presence of water. The engine may cut out suddenly, and black or white smoke may come out from your engine.

Now that you know how to keep your diesel fuel safe, you can better store the fuel and ensure its long-term storage. You will be glad five years from now that you did all you can to make your fuel last.

Appliances that Need Regular Replacements

Electrician checking a malfunctioning refrigerator with lady ownerPeople have come a long way since the Industrial Revolution. Humans can no longer imagine living their lives without electricity and appliances. However, nothing lasts forever. Even the sturdiest ones need replacement. Otherwise, they become a waste of energy and costly to repair.

When it comes to home maintenance, do not forget to replace these appliances too:

Air Conditioner

ACs have a very long lifespan of up to 20 years, although you may not have to change the entire unit. You can replace the defective parts instead. Air conditioners, however, need regular maintenance for it to function properly. If you fail to keep up with that, you may have to buy a new one soon.

Winters can be frigid cold, so furnaces are your best friends. Like the ACs, they can last for two decades. But even if they are still working, you have to think of replacing them by the thirteenth year. Furnaces become less efficient as they age. In turn, your electric bill may increase over time.

If you are living in Indiana where winters can be harsh, you can benefit from a healthy furnace. Keep track of its life and buy furnace in Indiana when necessary, preferably from reputable vendors such as Legacy Heating & Air.

Many factors affect the longevity of the fridge. One of these is the type. For example, standard refs outlast the compact ones by at least three years. Another consideration is the amount of care you give it. The lack of it can mean damaged coils and refrigerants, which means they take a long time to cool.

This can then potentially increase your electric bill. You also need to clean it regularly. Lastly, see to it there is no mold growth that can harm your health.

These are mere guidelines. If you want to know the appliance’s estimated lifespan, check its manual. Read it too to know how to take care of these items properly.

Quick-Release or Slow-Release Fertilizer: Which is Better?

Using plant fertlizerNot all types of fertilizers are the same. While they can help your grass grow, some types may do more damage than good. This makes it even more important to know their differences or the types of nitrogen sources contained in the product you use.

Quick-Release Fertilizers

With these, plants get immediate access to nutrients. When applied and dissolved in water, the water-soluble nitrogen becomes accessible to grass. As quick-release fertilizers make nutrients rapidly available, they promote fast greening and shoot growth.

Greenside Landscaping and other Salt Lake City lawn fertilization experts note that the downside is they harm the soil through nitrate leaching. This could also mean that more fertilizer is wasted by running off into waterways and streams. They can also burn the grass when over-applied and only last for about two to four weeks.

Slow-Release Fertilizers

The best thing about these fertilizers is that they help grass grow uniformly. They can also last longer about six to eight weeks or even longer, which means that you don’t need to apply them frequently. They may release nutrients slowly, but they allow the grass to absorb nutrients more efficiently.

The major drawback, of course, is the price. This is because they’re more costly than quick-release fertilizers. Lawn care experts, however, encourage the use slow-release fertilizers if you want healthy grass. There are two types to choose from:

  • Organic – This contains water-soluble nitrogen. In most cases, they take more time to release nutrients. It works well on moist soil, which should also be warm enough to encourage organism activity.
  • Coated or Slowly Soluble – This often comes in the form of pellets and rely on soil moisture when releasing nutrients. Some coated fertilizers may also last for up to one year, resulting in fewer applications.

Slow-release or natural organic fertilizers are mostly recommended by lawn care professionals. It’s also important to remember to fertilize moderately, as an over-fertilized turf invites lawn problems. You can also benefit from getting expert help when fertilizing your lawn.

Bamboo: A Greener Sleeping Experience

Bamboo Bed SheetsAside from being a Panda’s natural food and habitat, bamboos are known for its strength and durability. People in some of the provinces in the Philippines live in bamboo houses they made by themselves. A bamboo house is known for its durability. With proper care, it can last for years.

In the recent years, the bamboo plant started to enter the fabric industry. Bamboo bed sheets are starting to be a big thing and more and more people are starting to cater it. Here are some of the reasons why.

Here are reasons why every bed needs a bamboo bed sheet:

  1. Economical and ecological

Bamboo plants are easy to grow as they do now require pesticides and complex planting procedures, making it an earth friendly choice. Also, bamboo sheets do not cost more than traditional cotton linens. This makes it a good and suitable choice for your homes.

  1. Bed sheet for all seasons

Bamboo fiber is thermo-regulating and breathable. This makes it the perfect bed sheet choice throughout the year because it can keep you warm and cozy during the winters and make you feel cooler during the summer.

  1. Durable

If a bamboo can exhibit its durability in being a home, it also exhibits its strength even in its thinnest and softest form. Bamboo sheets can withstand anything but are pleasant to touch and even softer than cotton itself.

  1. Hypoallergenic

Bamboo plants require little to no fertilization because of its natural anti-bacterial properties. When made into bed sheets, bamboo retains (although not fully) its antimicrobial and hypoallergenic properties. The fabric is also resistant to dust mites and germs. This makes it a great choice for people prone to allergies and chemical reactions.

The next time you change your bed sheets, try bamboo bed sheets and make your sleeping experience a green one as well.

U.S. Plans to Update Info on Nutritional Product Labels

Product Labels

Product LabelsThe U.S. government plans to adopt changes on how food and beverage products are labeled to cut waste and improve the awareness nutrition information.

Many Americans are particularly confused on certain dates listed on a food product or beverage label, leading them to think that an item has gone bad or become unfit for consumption, according to Sasha Stashwitck of the National Resource Defense Council.

As a result, the average family in the country not only throws away around $1,500 worth of food in a year due to misinformation, but also contribute to the problem of material waste, Stashwitck said.

On the other hand, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service also intends to update nutritional information rules for labels on meat and poultry products.

Product Labels

The FSIS intends to change the regulations for nutrition label to align them with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s own rules. Aside from providing clearer details, the proposed rules aim to enhance awareness of healthy eating habits among consumers.

Some of the changes that may be imposed include the update on defining single-serving containers, the list of nutrients either required or allowed to be declared and modify the look of the Nutrition Facts label.

The FSIS announced the proposal on Dec. 1, 2016, and it will seek feedback from the public for the following 60 days.

One for All

With the prevalence of varying product labels on food products, the Department of Agriculture plans to simplify things for buyers by asking the food manufacturers to use the “Best If Used By” label to keep everyone on the same page.

As opposed to the traditional expiration date on items, Stashwitck said that the new one serves as producers’ guide for consumers on the shelf life and food quality of a certain product.

Flexo Impressions notes that buyers should also do their part by making sure food and other items are stored properly for safe consumption.

Helpful Gift Basket Ideas: Put a Smile on Their Faces

Holiday Gifts in LakevilleWith the holidays fast approaching, gift ideas shouldn’t be that difficult to figure out. Trees are aglow. Cakes and candies are everywhere, exposing your loved ones to the risk of tooth decay. Why don’t you give them gifts that would take care of their teeth and gums?

Silent Lesson Wrapped in a Gift Hamper

This is an opportunity to teach your kids some vital lessons about oral care. Make it a fun experience by going for alluring dental care products such as brushes that glow or come with musical tunes. Throw in plaque disclosing agents for self-monitoring of the kids’ brushing and flossing techniques.

Once your child has brushed and flossed, plaque disclosing agents will stain areas that still contain plaque (bacteria film). This will teach them to do a better job on their next brushing session. The American Dental Association recommends the thorough removal of plaque to avoid tartar (hardened plaque) formation, which may only be removed through a visit to a dental services provider in Lakeville.

Oral Care Gift Hamper

You need not take away the fun that comes with holiday baskets. Traditionally, the gift hampers are packaged with confectioneries and processed foods. Let the status quo remain, at least for the holiday season. However, toss in some of the following dental products to act as a timely reminder that oral care is paramount:

  • Special formulated toothpaste for plaque removal or for teeth whitening
  • Toothbrush: a powered toothbrush will be a worthy gift for a family member.
  • Mouth rinses: choose between therapeutic and cosmetic mouth rinses. Cosmetic mouthwashes mask mouth odors while therapeutic rinses contain ingredients that guard against tooth decay.
  • Interdental cleaners: kill two birds with a single stone. Consider using a piece of the dental floss to wrap the gift hamper.

This season, show that you care for your loved ones. Use that holiday hamper to give them oral hygiene products that prepare their teeth for next year.

Lock-Out Tag-Out Program: The Basic Steps

Securing your Electrical Applications

Securing your Electrical ApplicationsPlenty of severe accidents has occurred when and individual thought that an equipment or power it uses was safely turned off. Lock-out Tag-out is a simple, yet extremely effective way to safeguard yourself and other people by making certain that machines stay temporarily and completely turned off.

The following are essential steps for lock-out tag-out program:

Always Think, Check, and Plan Ahead

If you are responsible for the entire program, determine which system components must be turned off. Identify which equipment, switches and people involved, and then plan the restarting strategy.

Communicate Effectively

Inform all individuals who’ll get affected that you’ll be implementing a lockout tag-out procedure. Determine all relevant power sources, including electrical circuits, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, as well as gravity and spring energy systems.

Neutralise All Power Right from the Source

Basically, disconnect electricity, block or release spring energy, block all movable components, bleed or drain pneumatic and hydraulic lines, and put all suspended components into resting positions.

Lock-Out Every Power Source

Utilise a lock that’s specifically developed for this purpose, make sure that all relevant workers have their own locks.

Tag-Out Every Machine and Their Power Source

Tag all starter switches, pressure lines, controls, and suspended components. The tags must indicate the name of the person-in-charge, department, contact details, reason for the lock-out tag-out procedure, and time and date of tagging.

Conduct a Complete Evaluation

Double-check every step in the entire procedure by pushing start buttons, testing electrical circuits, and turning on valves to see if power has really been cut off.

Restarting the System

Once the procedure has been completed, restart the system and remove your own tags and locks. When every machine and worker is accounted for, you could now turn on the power.

Keep in mind that a lock-out tag-out program must include proper training, written procedures, and routine inspections. Training must include affected employees and authorised employees. Written procedures are crucial for communicating vital information to employees involved in lock-out tag-out procedures and as such must contain locations of energy sources and all detailed instructions for the procedure. Lastly, procedures must be routinely inspected and updated, with all revisions communicated to relevant employees. Remember, the lock-out tag-out procedures will only work if they contain accurate information.
